You have the right to healthcare, college, and to not be offended as an American citizen. These are some of the many rights that the left believes should be afforded to anybody that is alive and in the United States. However, I don’t think they realize that most of their self-proclaimed rights would take away other rights from other people.
The rights provided by the founding fathers are all rights that don’t take away rights from anyone else. Freedom of speech, the right to bear arms, a right to a speedy trial are all rights that are provided for you. What’s wonderful is you don’t have to burden any other citizen to achieve these rights. Don’t get me wrong, many brave men and woman of the military paid for these rights with their lives, but I am referring to the fact that freedom of speech doesn’t require the government to forcibly take from one citizen to give to another. You don’t have to redistribute anybody’s earnings for the right to own a gun or to pursue happiness.
This is not the case with the left’s rights. A right to a free college education or to healthcare is stealing the earnings from somebody else. The right to not be offended or to not have hear something that makes you uncomfortable, takes away somebody else’s right to free speech. The right to be able to force someone to provide a service for you, (christian baker) even if they don’t want to is borderline slavery.
The sad thing is that many people on the left believe that they are being kind and caring individuals. However, in reality they are playing God by deciding who gets what based on their own perceived morality. The reason that Democratic members of congress love when liberals call for these extra so called rights is because every one of the left’s proposed rights takes away power from the people and gives to the government. It allows the government to tax heavier, censor speech, and arrest people who don’t do as they ask.
Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Chavez, Castro, and many other dictators told the people that they deserved these rights and when they had the power they never relinquished it. When you want more rights to other peoples property the only thing you’re doing is taking away rights and giving them to the government. When you tell Republicans too stay out of the bedroom because they don’t want to subsidize birth control, you are actually just letting government into your bedroom. Rights are the most important thing a person can have in a civilized country, so when you want rights please make sure you’re not taking away someone else’s.

Maybe this is a no brainer, but it is “stuff” like this that should be kept…even if it stays in the back of a closet, it is history. In this case, newspapers don’t take up much space. What to keep and what not to keep is always a challenge for simpler living, the decision to keep even a single newspaper should not be taken lightly.

I don’t think the iPhone 5 or the iPad is the “new American idol”. I think consumerism is really the idol. We have to have the latest and greatest gadget, car, TV, house, clothes, or widget. If it’s advertised to seem like it it will improve our daily lives or our status among others then as Americans we want it. The idol is not a thing, per se, it’s the culture.

As an interested Australian I wish you well in looking into the religious affiliation of your PM and how it affects his decision making. As a comparison, we have an up front atheist in Julia Gillard as our PM but we still have issues. The previous conservative government started a program of putting “chaplains” into public schools. Unfortunately the present government has continued this practice. This allows prosletization within our public schools which are meant to be secular.
