When you are working at a place like I do, like a grocery store, you have a lot of thought traffic. Here’s the concept: The more people that cross your path will generally lead to more opinions expressed in your presence. If you are like me more than half of the time, you agree, and then the conversation ends. Sound familiar? Yeah, it happens to me, but it’s becoming harder to stomach.

I typically travel the path of non-confrontation. Usually I find that no matter what, if I just ignore something long enough, the situation dissipates and it no longer requires worrying or attention. But there is a point in time where you have to put your foot down or draw the proverbial line in the sand. As one of the most agreeable and easy going people ever to live, it is not as easy for me to put my foot down as it is the give the old shrug of the shoulders, agree and walk away approach. That’s usually my favorite.

The problem I see more and more is that the people like me, non-arguers at heart, are usually the ones with reasonable opinions, beliefs and ideals. What we hear regularly throughout the day, however, is generally uneducated blabber by people that just watch 10 minutes of news or the summary of a debate and arrogantly believe they understand complex situations and matters. The problem is that the people who speak out are often the voices that are heard, yet their ideas are formulated by what they are told to think on television. If you are like me, you just listen and listen, sometimes to nonsense, but again, it’s much easier to just listen rather than complaining.

The reason people buy into and support a socialist party member or radical ideas is because people like me don’t ever speak up. It’s not in our nature. But can you really live with the candidates in this presidential election? I sat in the voting booth during the presidential primary for a solid 25 minutes thinking in my head “who is the least bad that I can vote for?”

The truth is there will never be a perfect person. Never will you see a perfect presidential candidate. Your job is to SPEAK UP. If you see or hear something you don’t like, tell someone about it. If you disagree with something, don’t just nod your head like I do most of the time (even though it is so much easier), tell the person you disagree. This is the only way to start changing things for the better. It is time for the people with their mouths shut tight to open up and speak their mind. Inform, educate, and most importantly, speak your mind.
