Should the President Affect Your Life

It seems that in every democratic debate there is always a moderator that asks “I have a problem. How will you fix it?” My question is, do you want to give one man the ability to unilaterally affect everyone’s life to a large extent. I know that the President does and should have a lot of power, but how is he/she supposed to tend to every issue for 300,000,000 people? Would the rest of the government even be necessary if the President ultimately makes all the decisions? People assume that the growing turn out of voters since the 90’s is a good thing and it is usually a good thing, but it causes me to wonder why.

I believe that the reasoning behind this is because since the 90’s Presidents have been given much more power. Citizens realize that and decide that who becomes President will affect their lives. This also leads to hero worship of their candidate because they will be the person that will solve all the problems. The candidate would have to be pretty Godlike to be able to solve all those problems as well.

There are several issues that arise if Presidents have too much power. If the President holds that much power, then whichever candidate is in office will keep that parties supporters happy. However, the rest of the population will feel isolated causing partisanship. It is actually easier for crony capitalism to occur with a big Government, because there are much less people that need to be paid off if all the power is in the President’s office. Another problem is we’ll never be able to compare what works with what doesn’t. When the power is within the states you can look at the different policies in each state and evaluate what works. Another problem that arises is that the next President can come in and erase all progress if he/she doesn’t agree with the policies. Also, what works in Nebraska might not necessarily work in Florida, but if the President decides for everyone that he will have a standard that they both have to fulfill. Finally, the most important issue that arises is there is a much higher probability of tyranny occurring. If one maniac deceives the population and gets into office, they can erase laws and become dictator. Does Adolph Hitler ring a bell?

I suppose the question that everyone should ask themselves is; “What is the role of the Federal Government.” I believe that their jobs are to protect their citizens from foreign and domestic threats, to force people to honor contracts, to have basic guidance in laws, and to make sure the states live up to the basic standards of those laws. Other than that I believe the states should have most of the power. I will say this again, it’s harder for a corporation to corrupt that many people. It also leads to competition amongst the states which will show laws and regulations work better. No one my age seems to think this way anymore, as worship of candidates has grown widespread in both parties. These people will never admit anything wrong of their candidate, even if it is clear, because they are essentially saying their god is not perfect. I don’t know, but this is today’s America.
