It seems every which way we turn there’s some problem out there that the free market can’t figure out and the government must step in and save us from ourselves. It was too difficult for the market to get enough home loans out, so the government intervened and pushed sub-prime mortgage loans. It was too difficult for students to find funds for college so the government first guaranteed the loans and then in the 90’s jumped in the loan subsidization business all together. African Americans were disadvantaged through years of slavery and institutional racism; so affirmative action was started in colleges across the United State. All these well intentioned solutions sounded great and were going to solve a problem over an extended period of time. After that we would no longer need the program once the market’s shortcomings have been atoned for.

The problem with all these solutions is they don’t work and create much larger problems. With the subprime mortgages, the loans were divided into trenches and packaged up into mortgage backed securities. In less than 15 years, the banks started to fail and the worst financial crisis since the great depression was created. But then the almighty Government stepped in and bailed out the banks with taxpayer money after forcing the banks to make the loans.

As for the Government helping with access to funds for college, it did become easier for students to obtain money to pay for college. Before the Government stepped in, my mother went to a private college and was able to pay for her entire tuition with a summer job and some part time work during the school year and my father was able to do the same at a state college. The reason I mentioned that is because that would never be able to happen if you are attending college now. Prices have skyrocketed because the Federal college loan program has allowed colleges to not have to compete on price. They can charge whatever they feel and the young students will be able to pay for it, even if their major won’t help them with a job in the future. I doubt there are any jobs in gender studies or dance theory. The only competition among the colleges is who can get there college to look the most like a four-star resort.

Affirmative action has done nothing for the black community. They placed students in colleges which they were not suited for and made it very difficult to succeed. This placement, more often than not, left these students discouraged with failure. Thomas Sowell has said that a black student who would score in the top 10% in math would be sent to MIT along with other students who scored in the top 1%. He would then be at the bottom of the top of his class and have to struggle to keep up, because he was ill suited for that college. He would have been at the top of his class at a state college and would have been able to graduate. Thomas also poetically stated, “there is no honor in failing out of the Ivy league.”

The worst part is, even after the clear failures of these programs, and numerous others, they still continue today because they sound great in a sound bite. A politician, unlike anyone in the private sector, does not have to be right and they pay no price if they are wrong. They simply blame the failure on something else and continue indefinitely. How long does a program continue to get funding if there is a lack of achievement, regardless of its good intentions ? Should the person that started the program be held accountable and be asked why they didn’t they foresee or account for outside forces that caused the failure? Do they even want to solve the issue at all, or just continue to provide Government jobs to a hopeless cause? These questions I ask myself all the time, and still many of our youth today want more Government to solve their problems.
