In 1998, a study was published in the Lancet by a group of 12 authors (Wakefield et al., 1998), which suggested that vaccines are linked to autism in children. The results of this study put parents into a frenzy about the potential dangers of vaccines, and this fear now contributes to the non-vaccination of over ~3 million children annually (according to the CDC) and the spending of millions of dollars to investigate autism/vaccine research since 1998 (according to the National Institute of Health (NIH)). By assessing the evidence presented in the Wakefield et al., 1998 study, delving into the novel research regarding the association between vaccines and autism we’ll identify the truth behind this correlation.

To begin, lets evaluate the Wakefield et al., 1998 study by dissecting the experimental design. Twelve children, predisposed with intestinal abnormalities, were chosen for this study. Of the 12 children, nine had autism. And of the nine children with autism, eight had parents who believed their child’s autistic-behavioral symptoms began after administration of the Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine. From this information, the authors inferred that an association existed between the MMR vaccine and autism.

Unfortunately, for the authors, the observations addressed by the parents were established on speculation, and not on standardized scientific measures, which questions the validity of the interpretations. Furthermore, there was no statistical analyses performed, proving no association and no causation between autism and the MMR vaccine. Ultimately, the Wakefield et al., 1998 study ignores various experimental design criteria, yet, the findings gained momentum in the public press, and resulted in NIH funding additional research addressing the association between autism and vaccinations.

However, in the coming years, supplemental research could not identify an association. Just one year after the Wakefield et al., 1998 study, a novel study appeared in the Lancet, which covered 500 autistic children and found no association between autism and the MMR vaccine (Taylor et al., 1999). In 2004, a study matched 1294 children with autism against 4469 without autism and found no relationship between autism onset and the MMR vaccine (Smeeth et al., 2004). In 2005, a systematic review, which included 31 studies, revealed no evidence of a link between autism and the MMR vaccine (Demicheli et al., 2005). Then in 2012, the same group updated their research with a total of 66 studies and over 14.5 million children, and found no relationship between the MMR vaccine and autism (Demicheli et al., 2012). The evidence for an association between the MMR vaccine and autism appears to be absent; instead evidence for the lack of an association between the MMR vaccine and autism is vast.

So what did the authors of the Wakefield study have to say when the supplemental evidence suggested no relationship? Ten of the 12 authors retracted their claims that the MMR vaccine is associated with autism, a rare occurrence in scientific literature. One author could not be contacted before the retraction, and only the main author stayed firm with the study’s findings.

However, in 2011, the British Medical Journal investigated the Wakefield et al., 1998 article. It found that the main author manipulated the records, dates, and numbers to create the facade that there was an association when there was not. Additionally, it discovered that the children included in this study were recruited by anti-MMR campaigners. So not only were test subjects chosen specifically, their records were also falsified. Clearly, from this evidence, it should be clear that the authors could not make the claim that an association between autism and the MMR vaccine exists.

Yet, there are numerous individuals who ignore the truth about the Wakefield et al., 1998 study (which is not a scientific study) and the current scientific findings which refute an association. It is, however, interesting to find inconsistency in human behavior, considering many, if not all, of these individuals began their hatred for vaccination based on a ‘research study’, albeit one that lacks scientific grounds. Nevertheless, their outcry ultimately forces NIH to reduce funding for other necessary research, so that an association can be confirmed.

Identifying patterns is one way animals learn and adapt in the environment. So it isn’t surprising that parents pick up on patterns when it affects their children. Unfortunately, correlation can be blinded by coincidence. When diseases or conditions develop about a year or so into a child’s life, like autism, and coincidently, the same age a child receives their vaccinations, parents may be inclined to connect the two independent issues. Scientific research is exercised to tweeze coincidence from correlation. But even so, there are those who reject the scientific evidence, and thus, the responsibility is placed on the well-informed to educate the inept.

It’s curious that the association between the MMR vaccine and autism was based on the observation of eight parents, along with the lies of one researcher, which ignited a fear of vaccinations for over 15 years. Just imagine if the power of these eight individuals could be harnessed for a constructive cause.
